School District #49 (Central Coast)

The Board of School Trustees for School District #49 (Central Coast) is committed to the provision of high quality leadership and personnel in order to provide students with equal opportunities for career choices, to develop social responsibility and to acquire the skills necessary for lifelong learning within a safe environment.

Nestled amidst the Coast Mountains and the outlying Central Coast of beautiful British Columbia lies School District #49 (Central Coast). We are geographically one of the largest school districts in the province but the smallest in terms of student population with only 5 schools. We are honoured and acknowledge the fact that our schools are on the traditional territories of the Nuxalk, Heiltstuk and Oweekeno people.

The majority of our students live within the beautiful Bella Coola Valley known for its soaring peaks, abundant wildlife, and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. We educate just over 200 students in our five schools in Bella Coola/Hagensborg, Oweekeno and Shearwater.

Travel to and from Bella Coola/Hagensborg is possible via Highway 20 and is some 420 km from Williams Lake. Bella Coola/Hagensborg is serviced daily by Pacific Coastal Airlines and in the summer months by BC Ferries out of Port Hardy. Travel to and from Oweekeno and Shearwater is possible via plane and boat year round.

The District boasts a thriving StrongStart Program, an innovative off-site trades program, a strong first nations culture and language programs, a creative band and fine arts program, and an excellent outdoor education program in a place where wilderness abounds.

For parents and students we can offer small class sizes with strong teacher support and a large number of extra-curricular opportunities for students to participate in. For potential employees we can offer a wonderful opportunity to both work and play in a small rural setting with an excellent compensation package.
